Synopsis

The feature debut of Dilip Mehta – who co-wrote the script with his much-celebrated sister Deepa (HEAVEN ON EARTH, KCFF ‘09) – this richly textured and well-seasoned comedy depicts a clash of sensibilities both cultural and culinary. Freshly posted in New Delhi, a Canadian diplomat (Lisa Ray, ALL HAT, KCFF ‘08) and her chef husband (Don McKellar, MONKEY WARFARE, KCFF ‘07) soon realize who’s really in charge of their new residence: their cook and housekeeper Stella (Seema Biswas, AMAL, KCFF ‘08). But what they don’t know is that Stella’s outward expressions of piety conceal her skill and enthusiasm for putting one over on her employers. When Stella consents to teach the idle hubby about Indian cuisine, she sets in motion a chain of events that threaten to overturn the household’s carefully maintained social order.

RUBY CAN'T FAIL

Special 10th Anniversary Presentation

RUBY CAN'T FAIL is the winner of KCFF’s 10 Years, 10 Minutes Award, a special initiative to celebrate the festival’s 10th anniversary. The award was developed to support and foster the local filmmaking community by providing $5,000 cash and mentoring to produce a short film in Kingston.

After 10 years in Hollywood struggling to make it as an actress and realizing that most of her roles have consisted of playing dead bodies on crime shows, Ruby Keebler admits she has pretty much failed. She has no job, no husband, no kids, and no prospects, now what? Ready for change but with few options, she returns home to the small lakeside town where she grew up.
